| Reverse description | Full-length figure of Christopher Columbus standing at centre, depicted in period costume including doublet and boots, shielding his eyes with his right hand while grasping a ship's rope with his left, the rope descending to a coiled anchor cable at his feet. To the lower left, a detailed rendering of a period caravel under full sail is depicted within a decorative inner border of alternating dashes and rectangles. The denomination $50 appears to the right of the central figure, and the legend CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS arcs along the upper periphery. The mintmark FM appears in the lower field. |

Cook Islands issued a wave of large-format silver commemoratives through the late 1980s targeting the collector market directly, with little pretense of circulation. This piece anticipates the 1992 quincentenary of Columbus's first Atlantic crossing, a date that generated an unusual volume of competing commemorative programs across dozens of countries simultaneously — most with no meaningful connection to the event.
KM#67 is one of several Columbus-themed issues Cook Islands released in this period under licensing arrangements common to the Franklin Mint era of commemorative production.
