Amerigo Vespucci's actual contribution to exploration has long been debated — he never commanded a major expedition the way Columbus or Magellan did, yet his letters, particularly the Mundus Novus of 1503, convinced European cartographers that the landmass Columbus reached was a continent previously unknown to them. The German cartographer Waldseemüller named it "America" on his 1507 map specifically because of those letters, a decision he later tried to reverse in favor of Columbus — too late, as the name had already spread.
Cook Islands issued extensively in this period under licensing arrangements, with commemorative silver marketed primarily to the collector market rather than circulated domestically.
