| Additional information |
Australia's gold sovereign series traces directly to the colonial-era sovereigns struck at Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth from the 1850s onward — coins that circulated globally as standard gold currency under the British monetary system. The Perth Mint, opened in 1899 as a branch of the Royal Mint, was the last of the three to strike sovereigns and the only one to survive into the present era as an operating facility.
This 2021 issue marked Elizabeth II's 95th birthday, which fell on 21 April of that year — her last celebrated milestone before her death in September 2022.
