The Year of the Rooster issue sits in the middle of Perth Mint's long-running Lunar Series II, which launched in 2008 and committed the mint to producing twelve consecutive animal issues through 2019. Perth had learned hard lessons from Lunar Series I — secondary market demand for the earlier series spiked dramatically once collectors realized complete sets required sustained purchasing over a decade, and Series II was structured from the outset to capitalize on that pattern. The 2017 Rooster attracted particular collector attention in mainland Chinese markets, where the rooster carries strong associations with punctuality and fidelity.
