The Perth Mint's kangaroo bullion series changes its reverse design annually — a deliberate policy introduced to stimulate collector demand and secondary market activity, and one that distinguishes it commercially from the fixed-design Australian Nugget issues that preceded it in the 1980s. The .9999 fineness, rather than the .999 standard used by most sovereign mints at the time of this series' launch, was a calculated marketing position aimed directly at competing with the Canadian Maple Leaf.
