| Additional information |
Australia's gold kangaroo bullion program launched in 1986 as the "Gold Nugget" series, initially featuring depictions of actual gold nuggets found on Australian soil. The kangaroo reverse design replaced the nuggets in 1989 — a commercial decision driven by international market research showing the animal had stronger global brand recognition than the nuggets. Since 1990, the reverse design has changed annually, making no two years technically identical and giving the series an unusual collector dimension that pure bullion coins rarely possess.
The Perth Mint strikes these to a fineness of .9999 in most years; the .999 specification here is the earlier standard.
