The Perth Mint's four-nines fine gold standard — .9999 purity — was a deliberate commercial decision to outclass the South African Krugerrand and Canadian Maple Leaf in purity, positioning Australian bullion coinage as the benchmark for investors who cared about fineness above all else. By 2004, the kangaroo series had been running continuously since 1987, with the reverse design changed annually specifically to discourage melting and encourage collector retention alongside bullion demand.
KM#909 covers two years of issue, an unusual span for an annually dated bullion type in this series.
