Additional information

The Australian Nugget series launched in 1986 as a direct challenge to the South African Krugerrand's dominance of the retail bullion market, with the Perth Mint positioning its .9999 fineness as a deliberate point of difference — the Krugerrand is only .9167. The design rotates annually, a marketing decision made to drive collector demand alongside bullion demand, a strategy borrowed in part from the Canadian Maple Leaf program.

Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of Elizabeth II was adopted by Australian coinage in 1999, making this transitional date particularly specific to track across the series.
