The "GML" designation marks the work of engraver Susanna Blunt, whose initials appear on the fourth portrait of Elizabeth II introduced across Canadian coinage in 2003. That portrait replaced the Dora de Pédery-Hunt version used since 1990. The 2004 date on this Maple Leaf marks the series' 25th anniversary — the original one-ounce gold Maple Leaf having debuted in 1979 as the first modern bullion coin struck to .999 fineness, later refined to the .9999 standard that became the RCM's calling card against South African and American competition.
