Australia's platinum koala series launched in 1987 as a direct competitor to the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle bullion programs, with Perth positioning itself aggressively in the Asian investment market. KM#252 corresponds to the Ian Rank-Broadley transition period for the obverse, though the third Raphael Maklouf portrait was still in use for these 1993–1994 issues.
