Additional information

The Australian Nugget series launched in 1986 as Australia's direct answer to the South African Krugerrand's dominance of the global gold bullion market. Unlike the Krugerrand, which was barred from import in several Western countries during the apartheid sanctions era, the Nugget was positioned to capture that displaced demand — particularly in the United States and West Germany. The Perth Mint, rather than the Royal Australian Mint, was chosen to produce the series due to its established refining infrastructure and its .9999 fineness capability, a purity standard the Krugerrand could not match.

The 1991–1992 issues mark the transition year when the nugget reverse designs began rotating annually, a deliberate strategy to stimulate collector demand alongside bullion buyers.
