The Cayman Islands Monetary Authority issued this commemorative $50 to mark its own 25th anniversary — CIMA was established in 1997 when the islands separated their financial regulatory functions from the Cayman Islands Currency Board. De La Rue printed the note in London, as they have for virtually every Cayman Islands issue since the territory's first decimal currency in 1972.
Commemorative notes in the Cayman series rarely see significant circulation. The territory's economy runs heavily on US dollars in practice, leaving CI dollar notes disproportionately held as keepsakes rather than spent.
