Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie was among the largest commercial colleges in the United States during the late nineteenth century, enrolling thousands of students annually in bookkeeping, penmanship, and mercantile arithmetic. Notes like this were issued as instructional currency — practice instruments used in the college's simulated banking and accounting exercises, not redeemable instruments of any kind. Students handled, endorsed, and reconciled these notes as part of daily coursework.
C. C. Gaines served as principal of the college following the death of founder Harvey G. Eastman in 1878, and his signature on this piece dates it firmly within his tenure. The printer Hay & Hunolo operated in New York and produced several of the college's instructional series.
