Obverse description Close-up frontal effigy of the Statue of Liberty, engraved by John M. Mercanti, depicting her radiate crown with seven rays and flowing hair rendered in fine detail against a deeply mirrored proof field. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, integrating with the rays of the crown, while the date 1998 appears to the right of the effigy. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is inscribed to the lower right of the field, and E PLURIBUS UNUM curves along the lower left rim. The torch arm of the statue is partially visible at the lower left, contributing to the monumental character of the design.

Reverse description A bald eagle in full flight is depicted soaring above a coastal New England landscape, designed by Thomas D. Rogers. The scene features a rocky shoreline, a lighthouse, and a small harbour town rendered in fine relief, with a full moon rising in the upper field behind the eagle. The denomination $50 and the purity designation .9995 PLATINUM 1/2 OZ. appear in the lower field, flanked by the issuing authority legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcing along the upper rim. The West Point Mint mark W is positioned to the left of the composition statement. The overall design evokes American freedom and natural grandeur in a panoramic, deeply sculptural composition.
