| Obverse description | Full-length draped figure of Liberty striding forward, holding a torch aloft in her right hand and an olive branch in her outstretched left hand, with rays of sunlight emanating from behind her figure. The Capitol building appears in low relief in the lower left field, with a ring of thirteen stars encircling the border. The legend LIBERTY arcs along the upper rim, and the date appears in the right field. The design is based on Augustus Saint-Gaudens' celebrated Walking Liberty motif, rendered with rich sculptural detail. |

| Additional information |
The American Gold Eagle's .9167 fineness traces directly to a Congressional mandate in the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985, which specified 22-karat gold rather than the .9999 fine used by Canadian Maples and South African Krugerrands — a deliberate choice to produce a harder-wearing coin. The added silver and copper alloy was a practical concession to the realities of handling.
The 2021 issue marked a significant retooling: the reverse design was updated for the first time since the coin's 1986 debut, partly to incorporate modern anti-counterfeiting features. That same year saw production split between the traditional Roman numeral date and transitional pieces during the changeover.
