The Bank of British Columbia was chartered in London in 1862, making it one of the few colonial banks whose management and shareholders remained almost entirely British throughout its existence — head office on Lombard Street, branches in Victoria and the interior goldfields. Wm. Brown & Co. as printer places this note firmly in a tier of regional North American security printers working outside the dominant American Bank Note Company network, an unusual choice that reflects the bank's London orientation rather than continental North American banking norms.
The bank was eventually absorbed by the Canadian Bank of Commerce in 1901. High-denomination notes of this period rarely survived branch use in good order — the Pacific coast climate was not kind to paper.
