Hassan II commissioned this issue to mark the Green March's fourth anniversary — the 1975 mass civilian crossing into Spanish Sahara that forced Madrid's withdrawal from its last African territory. Morocco's central bank rarely struck silver commemoratives at this weight and fineness, making Y#76 one of the more substantial pieces in the modern Moroccan series. Production was handled with an eye toward foreign presentation rather than domestic circulation.
