Additional information

The Green March of November 1975 was a calculated political maneuver by Hassan II, who mobilized 350,000 unarmed Moroccan civilians to cross into the Spanish-controlled Western Sahara just as Franco lay dying in Madrid. Spain, unwilling to fight a crowd, signed the Madrid Accords within weeks and ceded the territory. This commemorative marks the fifth anniversary of that event — one of the more audacious territorial gambits of postcolonial Africa, achieved without a single shot fired by either side.
