Joan Martí i Alanis served as Bishop of Urgell — and therefore co-prince of Andorra — from 1971 until 2003, one of the longest tenures in that office in the modern era. Andorra's gold coinage from this period was produced almost entirely for collector export rather than domestic circulation, a deliberate revenue strategy for a microstate with no central bank and no mint of its own. The coins were struck under contract at foreign facilities.
The red squirrel series sits within a broader Andorran wildlife program from the late 1980s and early 1990s that generated multiple denominations across gold and silver. KM#64 is among the smaller-diameter gold issues from that run.
