Andorra adopted its first written constitution in 1993, ending a feudal co-principality arrangement dating to 1278 under which the Bishop of Urgell and the French head of state shared joint sovereignty — a structure that had survived, largely unchanged, through the French Revolution, two World Wars, and the entire Franco era. This coin marks the tenth anniversary of that document.
The bimetallic construction — a 4g gold insert seated within a substantial silver field — was a deliberate technical statement for a nation that had only begun issuing its own coinage in 1983, decades after most microstates had established numismatic programs.
