Additional information

Issued to mark Kuwait's liberation from Iraqi occupation on February 26, 1991, this coin was struck the following year as the country rebuilt its monetary infrastructure after Iraqi forces had looted the Central Bank and destroyed much of its records and reserves. The occupation had lasted seven months, during which Iraqi authorities attempted to replace the Kuwaiti dinar with the Iraqi dinar at a confiscatory exchange rate.

The .9167 fineness — 22-karat — places it in the traditional Gulf gold standard, consistent with regional bullion practice rather than the .9999 fine now common in commemorative issues.
