Jordan's piedfort issues of this period were produced in extremely limited quantities, almost exclusively for collectors and diplomatic gift sets — this piece almost certainly never circulated. The piedfort format, struck at double the standard planchet thickness, was revived in the modern era largely by the Franklin Mint and adopted by several Middle Eastern central banks in the 1970s and 80s as a prestige presentation format.
Hussein ibn Talal turned 50 in November 1985, having already ruled Jordan for over three decades through the 1967 war, Black September, and successive rounds of regional instability that repeatedly tested the Hashemite monarchy's survival.
