Sudan's shift to the dinar system had come in 1992, when the government redenominated at 10 old pounds to 1 dinar — a move driven by chronic inflation and the economic strain of prolonged civil conflict in the south. By 2002, the dinar itself was under pressure, and this denomination represented meaningful purchasing power only in the loosest sense. The currency would be abolished entirely in 2007 when Sudan reintroduced the pound, rendering the entire dinar coinage series short-lived by design.
