Obverse description The national coat of arms of The Gambia occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with two crossed axes, supported by two rampant lions, with a crested helmet and foliate mantling above. A ribbon below the shield bears the motto PROGRESS PEACE PROSPERITY. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE GAMBIA curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, and the date 1997 appears prominently in the lower field.

Reverse description A central scene depicts a kneeling supplicant presenting an offering to Mansa Musa (Kankan Musa), the celebrated 14th-century Mali emperor, who is shown seated on a throne and robed in royal regalia, holding a sceptre, beneath a stylised palm frond canopy. The legend KANKAN MANSA MUSA curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, and the denomination 50 DALASIS is inscribed along the lower periphery.
