The shifting signature combinations on this note trace Brazil's turbulent finance ministry in miniature. Oswaldo Aranha returned to the Finance Ministry under Vargas in 1953 and was still signing notes when Vargas shot himself in August 1954 — Eugênio Gudin, a liberal economist ideologically opposed to nearly everything Vargas had stood for, replaced him almost immediately. The two men's signatures appear on successive series of the same note, an accidental record of that rupture.
Gudin's tenure lasted less than eight months before Sebastião Paes de Almeida took over under Café Filho's administration. Three finance ministers across a single De La Rue printing run, series 116 through 585.
