Brazil's Tesouro Nacional notes of this period occupied an awkward institutional position — issued by the Treasury rather than the Banco do Brasil or the later Banco Central, which didn't exist until 1964. The autographed designation refers to the manuscript or facsimile signatures applied to authorize individual notes, a practice the Brazilian Treasury maintained long after most issuing authorities had moved entirely to printed signatures.

Thomas De La Rue's involvement places this firmly in the postwar period when Brazilian note production was still heavily dependent on London contracting. The second print distinction is meaningful for collectors: early and later print runs of P#145 show measurable differences in ink density and watermark registration.
