| Reverse description | A Bahian market woman (baiana) is depicted in full figure at center, rendered in a stylized, low-relief design characteristic of Brazilian numismatic art of the period. She wears traditional dress with a turban and layered skirts, and is shown surrounded by her wares including bowls and vessels arranged across the field. A fish is depicted in the lower portion of the design beneath the figure, referencing the coastal market culture of Bahia. The date appears in the exergue in incuse numerals. |

Brazil's cruzeiro was already in terminal decline by the time this coin entered production. The 1990 Collor Plan froze private bank accounts overnight in a desperate bid to choke off inflation that had exceeded 1,700% annually — one of the most aggressive monetary interventions in Latin American history. Coins of this denomination were functionally obsolete within months of issue, outpaced by price levels that made the 50-cruzeiro face value meaningless at retail.
The cruzeiro itself was abolished in 1993, replaced by the cruzeiro real at 1,000:1.
