Brazil's cruzeiro denominations were in near-constant flux during these years, overtaken by inflation that was already compounding at double-digit monthly rates. By 1984 the 50-cruzeiro piece had effectively lost any practical purchasing utility — a bus fare in São Paulo exceeded several hundred cruzeiros. The coin was still being struck while the government was simultaneously planning the cruzado reform that would replace the currency entirely in 1986.
