Robinson Crusoe Island — officially renamed from Más a Tierra by the Chilean government in 1966 specifically to boost tourism — is part of the Juan Fernández Archipelago and gave this coin its name. The island held Alexander Selkirk, the Scottish sailor whose four-year castaway experience from 1704 directly inspired Defoe's novel. Chile issued this copper piece as part of a broader World of Ends series highlighting remote Chilean territories, a program that leaned heavily on geographic novelty rather than monetary need.
