| Obverse description | The National Coat of Arms of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea occupies the central field, depicting a hydroelectric dam and power transmission tower set against a mountain landscape, surmounted by a five-pointed star radiating sun rays, the entire device flanked by sheaves of rice bound with a ribbon bearing an inscription. Small olive branches flank the denomination at the base. The Hangul legend encircles the design along the outer border, and the bold numeral '50' with the Hangul character for 'chon' appears prominently in the lower field. |

North Korea's specimen coinage from this period was produced almost exclusively for international distribution through Numismatic Guarantee channels and foreign currency shops — not for domestic circulation, where the won-based economy operated under strict state allocation rather than market exchange. The 1978 aluminium issues were among the first specimens the DPRK systematically exported, likely as part of hard currency generation during a period of acute foreign debt following the country's 1975 default on Western creditors.
