Kenya's first post-independence coinage was issued beginning in 1966, but the 50 cent denomination underwent quiet revision in the years following — the "with legend" distinction separating this type from its predecessor by the addition of "CENTRAL BANK OF KENYA" to the coin's inscription. The change was administrative rather than political, reflecting the bank's drive to assert institutional identity on the circulating currency of a nation barely a decade removed from British colonial rule.
