Obverse description Crowned and draped bust of Queen Victoria facing left, engraved by Leonard Charles Wyon, depicting the monarch wearing a small coronet set atop elaborately styled hair gathered in a chignon with a ribbon. The portrait is rendered in fine relief within an inner beaded circle, flanked by a decorative Greek key pattern border. The legend VICTORIA arcs across the upper field and QUEEN appears along the lower field, both in incuse Roman capitals.

Reverse description Central field displays the large numeral '50' with a stylised coconut palm tree incorporated between the digits, above the word CENTS and the date in the lower field, flanked by dots. The denomination '50' also appears in Tamil (௫௦) to the left and in Sinhalese script to the right. The legend CEYLON arcs across the upper portion within an inner beaded circle, surrounded by a decorative Greek key pattern border matching the obverse.
