| Obverse description | Central vignette presents three figures in a rural outdoor setting, engraved in letterpress style against a lightly toned ground. Circular guilloche medallions bearing the numeral '50' anchor the upper left and upper right corners, with the issuer legend 'THE STATE OF GEORGIA' in bold serif capitals across the centre and 'FIFTY CENTS' immediately below. The place and date of issue, 'Milledgeville, Ga.' and 'January 1st 1863', appear in the upper margins, flanked by a decorative ruled border; a small vignette of the Georgia State Capitol building is centred at the lower margin alongside the engraver's imprint and facsimile signature lines for the Comptroller General and Treasurer. The word 'COPY' is printed at lower right, identifying this as a modern replica. |
