Obverse description The South African coat of arms is depicted centrally within a nonagonal inner border. The arms feature the new post-2000 design with a Khoisan figure at the base and a secretary bird with spread wings above the shield. The motto ribbon below bears the ǀXam Khoisan phrase ǃKE Eː ǀXARRA ǁKE, meaning 'Unity in Diversity.' The date 2004 appears in the field, and the country name is inscribed in Afrikaans as 'Suid-Afrika' along the periphery.
