Obverse description A central vignette of the South Carolina palmetto tree, rendered in dark blue letterpress ink, is flanked on either side by large numeral denominators '50'. The curved legend STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA arches above the vignette, while the promise clause WILL PAY BEARER ON DEMAND 'IN CURRENT FUNDS' appears in spaced lettering below, with the written denomination FIFTY CENTS in bold ornate type beneath it. The date Feb. 1, 1863 is set at lower left, with a manuscript cashier's signature at lower centre-right.
