Company scrip issued by a retail grocery operation in Moundsville, Marshall County — coal and industrial country where wage payment in store credit was common enough through the mid-twentieth century that such tokens carried real purchasing weight. Whether this piece was issued to employees or functioned as change scrip for customers is not always clear with West Virginia grocery scrip, and issuance records for State Food Stores have not survived in any known public archive.
The card format at this size was typical of small-denomination mercantile scrip and wore badly in trouser pockets.
