Obverse description Draped bust of Liberty facing left, wearing a tiara-style headband inscribed LIBERTY, with elaborately rendered curled hair flowing behind the neck. Thirteen six-pointed stars arranged around the periphery, seven to the left and six to the right of the effigy. The date 1838 appears in the lower exergue, with a plain inner border and an outer beaded rim. The high-relief portrait is executed in a refined neoclassical style characteristic of Gobrecht's work.
