The Dalles issued this piece as part of the broader Oregon Centennial celebrations marking 100 years of statehood, which officially came in February 1859. Dozens of Oregon municipalities produced their own scrip and exonumia that year, creating a chaotic but historically rich body of local issues with no central oversight. The Dalles, one of the oldest incorporated cities in Oregon and a critical terminus of the Oregon Trail, had particular reason to participate.
These municipal centennial pieces circulated locally as promotional scrip rather than genuine currency, redeemable at participating merchants during the celebration period.
