Mswati III ascended to the Swazi throne in 1986 at age eighteen, making him one of the youngest ruling monarchs in the world at the time. The second portrait coinage, introduced in the mid-1990s, reflects his transition into mature kingship — Swazi royal portraiture on circulating coinage has historically tracked these dynastic milestones rather than following fixed schedules. The series ran through 2007, the year Swaziland issued revised coinage ahead of broader currency reforms tied to the lilangeni's continuing peg to the South African rand.
