Obverse description Right-facing effigy of Jacobus Johannes (Jimmy) Fouché (1898–1980), President of the Republic of South Africa from 1968 to 1975. The portrait is rendered in high relief in a naturalistic, formal style. Reverse description Three stylised floral sprigs, each representing a native South African bloom, arranged centrally in the field: an Arum Lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) to the left, an African Lily (Agapanthus africanus) at centre, and a Bird-of-Paradise flower (Strelitzia reginae) to the right. The denomination 50 appears in the field alongside the engraver's initials T.S., attributed to Tommy Sasseen.
