The GML (Gold Maple Leaf) bullion series has carried the radial lines background as an anti-counterfeiting measure since its introduction, but the one-gram denomination occupies an awkward commercial position — too small for serious bullion investors, too common for numismatists. These fractional pieces exist largely as entry-level product and gift items, a revenue stream the RCM has cultivated aggressively since the 1990s.
Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022, making 2023 the first full mint year to carry her effigy posthumously on Canadian coinage before the transition to Charles III was completed across the product line.
