Additional information

Niue's authority to issue legal tender coinage derives from a 1981 agreement with New Zealand, which retains responsibility for the island's defense and foreign affairs. That arrangement has made Niue one of the more prolific small-territory issuers of commemorative silver, with the New Zealand Mint producing the bulk of these collector-targeted pieces through the 2000s. This dog-year issue belongs to a twelve-piece lunar series timed to the Chinese calendar — a format that found a reliable retail market among Southeast Asian collectors during that decade.
