| Reverse description | The reverse features a naturalistic composition depicting five wood duck ducklings (Aix sponsa) clustered together in and around a nest of straw, set against a wetland background with cattails and a weathered log at the left. One duckling is perched atop the group, while the others rest below in varying poses, rendered in fine matte relief against a mirror-polished field. The engraver's initials DJH appear in the lower central field. The Latin binomial Aix sponsa is inscribed in italic lettering in the lower left field, while CANADA arcs boldly along the bottom. The denomination 50 CENTS and the date 1996 are inscribed vertically along the right arc. |
