Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's long-running series of commemorative fifty-cent pieces celebrating traditional Canadian winter activities, this 2001 issue draws on imagery tied to recreational sledding culture that became a fixture of rural Canadian childhood through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The series itself was introduced in 1998 and ran through the early 2000s, targeting the collector market directly — these coins never circulated in any meaningful quantity.
Struck in .925 silver at a mintage calibrated to collector demand, examples routinely survive in original packaging.
