Part of the RCM's broader push into fractional gold bullion and collector issues during the early 2010s, this piece belongs to a series that leaned heavily on Canadian marine imagery to differentiate small-format gold from the standard Maple Leaf program. The starfish design was one of several rotating nature subjects issued that year at the 1/25 oz weight class — a format the Mint had been expanding aggressively since around 2009 to capture the entry-level precious metals market.
KM#1493 confirms a low-mintage collector issue rather than a circulation strike; no 50-cent coin has circulated in Canada in any meaningful sense for decades.
