Additional information

This piece belongs to the Royal Canadian Mint's 1997 commemorative series marking the 500th anniversary of John Cabot's 1497 voyage to Newfoundland. Cabot's landfall — almost certainly somewhere on the island's northeast coast, though Cape Bonavista and L'Anse aux Meadows have both been argued — prompted Britain and Canada to jointly fund a replica vessel, the Matthew, which retraced the crossing that same year.

The series itself was a limited collector issue, never intended for circulation. Mintage was capped at 50,000 pieces across the sterling silver format.
