The 1997 fifty-cent dog breed series was part of the Royal Canadian Mint's sustained push through the late 1990s to expand collector-focused silver issues beyond conventional commemoratives. The Labrador Retriever entry in this set reflects the breed's particular prominence in Canada — the Lab takes its name from the Labrador Sea region, though the breed was actually developed and refined in Newfoundland before being exported to Britain in the early nineteenth century.
