Additional information

Canada's Formula 1 connection runs specifically through the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, named for the Quebec-born Ferrari driver killed during qualifying at Zolder in 1982. The Canadian Grand Prix had been dropped from the F1 calendar in 1987 over sponsorship disputes and only returned in 1988 — making the race's place in Canadian sporting culture something that had to be fought for and reclaimed rather than simply inherited.

This was the first year the Royal Canadian Mint issued a sport-themed 50-cent commemorative in sterling silver, opening what became an extended series through subsequent years.
