The Flower Fairies series draws on Cicely Mary Barker's illustrated children's books, first published in 1923, which became sufficiently embedded in British cultural life that licensing them for commemorative coinage decades later required no introduction to Commonwealth audiences. Cook Islands has issued gold-plated iron pieces of this type in quantity, targeting the novelty collector market rather than circulation — iron substrate coinage of this kind essentially never circulates, making condition a function of storage rather than handling.
