Issued as part of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization coin program, which ran through the 1970s and into the 1980s and prompted dozens of countries to produce specially designated circulation strikes with agricultural themes. Fiji's participation was straightforward — the FAO program required no special authorization beyond a government's willingness to redirect a standard mintage toward the initiative's promotional goals.
